Day 17

Onward to Morgan County, Indiana

Photo OM/WCEP

Thanks to a cold front that pushed south through the night, the winds were blowing from the right direction this morning. The migration had tailwinds to help them move another 55.6 miles! All sixteen cranes took off after Brooke Pennypacker flew in low over the crane enclosure and performed the third air pick-up of the journey. They flew one hour and 45 minutes, landing in Morgan County. Only one more stop remains in Indiana: Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, where the public is invited to watch the early morning takeoff (see Day 16).

  • What is the total distance gone?

  • Why did the direction of the winds change during the night? (You can learn which way the winds blow in a cold front and a warm front--and lots of other good wather stuff--by clicking here: David Aborn's Weather Primer.)
