Migration Day 25

3rd Day Delayed in Kankakee County, IL
From what direction are the winds blowing in this photo at dawn? OM

The pilots lifted off at 6:30 this morning on a test flight. Their hopes were dashed when they ran into headwinds on the flight path. Such winds would cut ground speed to 14 mph. Distance to the next site ( in Indiana) is 43.2 miles, which would have taken more than 3 hours to cover.

The weather will change, so don't be discouraged. Take a look at the arrival dates for the past three migrations. What is your prediction for this year's arrival?

  • What are two reasons for standing down when flight time in headwinds would take more than 3 hours? (HINT: These reasons were mentioned in past reports.)
  • How many no-fly days have your recorded on your chart so far?
