Sunny and cool--a good day to fly! Departing at 7:42 a.m., the cranes winged their way to Adair County, KY today after a flight of 1 hour and 37 minutes. They covered 54.5 miles. A slight headwind at the beginning became a tailwind at around 1800 feet. They flew about 38-40 mph today. Six birds took off and landed, but one bird took a detour. Crane #2 broke off about 10 miles into the trip and Deke picked him up and brought him back. Joe thought the bird could have been tired. Crane #4 is still being driven in a truck. They still may try to fly him when they aren't over such wooded landscape, but the password of this migration remains "one day at a time."

Try This! Journaling Questions
  • What is the total distance the birds have covered in the migration so far? How many miles to go?
  • What crane is shown in the photo at the right? (Seebanding codes.) Write a description of this crane in your journal. From past reports, what happened to this crane?
