Migration Day 54

62.3 Miles Gained!
Photo OM

At 8:58 a.m, the migration finally lifted out of "the Bowl." The pilots first had to clear their planes of the worst frost they've ever had. The crane-kids seemed as eager to leave as the pilots were. They stayed with Brooke's patched-and-repaired trike for the entire 62-mile flight into Haralson County, Georgia. Flying time was 1 hour 56 minutes. (So, at what time did they land?) With a bit of luck, they should be south of Atlanta tomorrow and headed for the homestretch! Update your migration chart and be sure to see today's Journaling Questions. Total distance traveled: 808.7 miles.

  • Click to enlarge the photo at the right and then look carefully at everything in it. Do you think the cranes are taking off...or landing? What clues helped you decide? After you write your answer, check/edit what you wrote against our flight lesson section explaining how birds use their outstretched feet as well as their open wings:

How Birds Fly: Coming Down Safely

  • How many stops did the migration make before reaching Citrus County, once they reached Florida--in 2001? 2002? 2003? What date do you predict for their Citrus County arrival this year? (To see our Journey South reports from past migrations, click here.)
  • "It's the worl'd greatest adventure," says Joe Duff about the ultralight-led migrations. Visit this video/news special at Whooping Cranes: Back From the Brink. Brooke Pennypacker says, "These guys [Whooping cranes] saw dinosaurs when they were first here. They deserve to stick around." What would YOU say to someone to get them interested in this migration project?
