Expected Migration Route
Fall, 2001

Shown in black, the fall migration route is expected to extend from Wisconsin's Necedah National Wildlife Refuge, across Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. The cranes will winter at Florida's Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge.

The migration is expected to begin sometime between October 10-15th. The trip could take anywhere between 6-8 weeks--it's up to the weather and the cranes. The plan is to travel for 3 weeks, "stage" for 2 weeks, then travel 3 more weeks. (Staging is natural during migration, as a time for the birds to rest and refuel.)
