Preparing for Migration
Keeping Crane Chicks Healthy

Back

  Here's what's happening, and why:

16-day-old chick

Whooper chicks get weighed every day for 7 days and then every week.

Biologists want to make sure they don't grow too fast. If they did, their legs couldn't hold them up, and they wouldn't survive a migration.

From 10 to 30 days of age, they may grow half an inch or more and gain 10% of their body weight each day!

Journaling Question

  • If you grew as fast as a young Whooping Crane, how tall would you be in a week? How much would you weigh?
