Wing Covers: A New Solution

Wrapping fabric around the 35-foot wingspan of four aircraft is not an easy job, but we finally decided that it is the only solution. While faced with frost a few years ago at an Indiana stop, our host directed us to a tent and awning maker. We bought 40 yards of nylon, 50 yards of Velcro, and a cheap sewing machine. In our stopover host's hangar we dropped one of the wings, laid out a pattern, and began to cut — with plenty of help from our host. It took 30 yards of material and 60 feet of Velcro for each aircraft. It wasn't easy, but we did it. And it worked! (Later we got professionally made covers, thanks to a generous donor.)

Wing covers are a new solution for keeping frost off the aircraft.
