The puppet is an important part of the costume. The puppet helps teach the tiny babies how to eat and drink. It can dispense treats of grapes, cranberries, or mealworms and "talk" to the cranes to encourage them. A hand-held vocalizer plays the soothing sounds of a parent. (Do you see the tall boots? They help keep feet dry when it's necessary to wade in the swamp!)
