On
November 11, 2009, pilot Chris Gullikson got a scare in the air.
He was about to try taking some birds from Joe's wing in an attempt
to break
the
flock up
for
the very
long flight to Stopover #6. Suddenly Chris
saw a drop in RPM. His instruments showed no signs of a problem,
but his engine was obviously failing! Then it went silent. Chris
said:
"I
turned away from the migration route. My
trike was soon a glider. Below lay hundreds of acres of landable
terrain.
To
my east I had a huge hay field with a road along the south side.
It was
a perfect scenario. I hardly had to
maneuver
at all as the trike quickly rushed to join the ground — bit
of flare at the end to arrest my descent and coast to a smooth
landing."
