The Eagle's Head
The bald eagle's scientific name, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, means white-headed sea-eagle. When a bald eagle reaches maturity at 4 - 6 years of age, the dark brown feathers on its head are replaced with white protective ones. Adults keep that "bald" head for life. Eagles of the opposite sex will recognize this one as a potential mate, and eagles of the same sex will respect its territorial boundaries.
