Sometimes eagles are dragged into the water trying to grab and lift a fish that's too large. If this happens, they will use their large wings to swim. It is very difficult for a wet bird to fly out of the water, so often they must swim to shore before taking off.

In extreme cases, an eagle can drown during an encounter with a really large fish, or if it's unable to swim far enough to make it to shore.
