About Observation Post #8
Point Piedras Blancas, California, United States

Gray whale mothers with their new calves pass this area from late March to late May. Biologist Wayne Perryman (with National Marine Fisheries Service) leads a team that counts the mothers and calves north that pass Point Piedras Blancas on the calves' first journey north. The cows and calves are the last whales to leave the warm lagoons in Mexico and swim north. A team watches 12 hours a day, six days a week during Mr. Perryman's official yearly cow/calf count.
