About Observation Post #16
Kodiak Island, Alaska

The first returning adult males can arrive in mid to late March. Mother/calf pairs normally return in mid May and keep coming into July. People on scenic Kodiak Island in the Gulf of Alaska are privileged to have nearly all of the Eastern Pacific Gray Whale population pass by on their journey north. Many grays remain around Kodiak until the time comes to migrate south again, while others continue further north. Kodiak holds a Whale Fest to celebrate the whales' return each spring. Among our reporters are Kodiak 4th graders as well as researchers Kate Wynne and Bree Witteveen.
