Field Notes 2011
Monterey Bay , California, United States

Sightings courtesy of Nancy Black and naturalists from Monterey Bay Whale Watch Center. You can check their official sightings log for total numbers of whales (but whether they're traveling north or south is not stated). Jeannie from Monterey Bay Whale Watch Center will report "firsts" and highlights from the whale's journey north as the whale watch captains see them.

March 30: Some trips were cancelled by weather but many whales were still reported. March 27 tallied 32 sightings.

March 15: March has been busy! There were 43 sightings on the 8th, and 23 sightings thee days in a row: March 10, 11 and 12.

Feb. 28: We have been seeing the Northern Migration for about 2 weeks. (We saw the first northbound Grays on Feb 8th.) I will write again when the calves begin to pass by. Jeannie

Feb. 15: There's plenty of whale traffic, still mainly southbound and counts per day are lower than January's big shows, when one day had 59! February's highest day so far was Feb. 5, with 30 whales. This week's two big days were Feb. 13 with 11 gray whales and Feb. 9 with 16. It's been a great season so far!

Feb. 8: We saw the first northbound Grays!
