In what turned out to be the only sighting of the day, Alisa Schulman-Janiger reports: "I was on early duty at our gray whale census this morning. We saw a nearshore gray whale cow/calf pair just after 6:30 a.m.; the mom was large and robust, lifting her head a bit each time she released her very tall blow. She and her calf rolled around a bit together and milled. The calf switched sides with its mom a few times—likely nursing! It is very tough to get a good shore-based shot of our whales as they pass by, since our
