Field Notes 2013
Depoe Bay, Oregon, United States

March 30, 2013: Hundreds of visitors anxious to catch a glimpse of the migrating whales during the 8-day Spring Whale Watch Week had great weather and saw lots of whales! Linda at the Whale Watch Center reports 2,862 sightings at the 24 sites on the coast during this annual event.

March 20, 2013: Gray whales started passing the Oregon coast about two weeks ago, reports Linda at the Whale Watch Center. They saw 36 northbounders last Saturday, so numbers are building.

They hope for good whalewatching weather so they can SEE the whales during Spring Whale Watch Week March 23-30. Trained volunteers are placed at great whale watching sites on the Oregon coast so they can teach others who come from frar and wide to watch and learn about the gray whales that migrate northward past here each year. What numbers will 2013 bring? Stay tuned!

The whaels here about halfway through their long journey. It's about 6-8 weeks to Alaska.
