Sightings Reported in Kodiak. Thanks, Susan Payne!
The orcas made many visits to the harbor during Whale Fest. This year we saw the orcas more than any year previous,
I think it is safe to say. April 15-18: 5 orcas, 2 females, 2 young, one male in harbor hunting sea lions.
April 21: We had a call of killer whales approaching harbor from the north at Spruce Cape at 9:20. We watched the
harbor until 10:00 pm, and saw no signs of the whales. 4/25 Orcas coming into the Kodiak town channel from the
north around 10:00 pm.
Meanwhile the grays are passing by in large numbers, and we have had the first reports of humpbacks in the area.
- 4/13: one gray in Monashka Bay. At Narrow Cape 12-15 blows in one hour.
- 4/14: At Narrow Cape, two whales breaching and many blows. Cold, windy day.
- 4/15:25-30 grays at Narrow cape in 4 hours of observing. One breached. Possibly one humpback.
- 4/17: At Narrow Cape, 0 whales. Two humpbacks seen on SE side of
- Monaschka Bay at 2:30pm.
- 4/19: 10-15 grays at Narrow Cape in 30 minutes. Visibility poor due to wind.
- 4/20: At Narrow Cape, constant activity with gray whales "frolicking" in the surf. Possible humpback
in the distance. Another account of 20 grays at Narrow Cape
- 4/21: At Narrow Cape, 2 blows seen. Very windy.
- 4/24: One unidentified whale in Monaschka Bay nearshore feeding.
