Migratory Marathon
Each year, gray whales travel a longer migratory journey than any other mammal. The roundtrip journey between their frigid arctic feeding grounds and the warm Mexican birthing lagoons adds up to more than 10,000 miles! Journey North follows the spring migration of gray whales from their nursery lagoons in Baja California to their summer feeding grounds in Alaska. News from our observers at outposts along the way will help narrate the long journey of these gentle giants and their new babies up the Pacific Coast.

Help Track Gray Whale Migration
If you're on the West Coast, we hope you'll help provide gray whale migration data this spring. To help us track the whales' trip to their northern feeding grounds, we ask observers to report the following information:

  • Report the FIRSTnorthbound Gray Whale you see this spring—and the FIRST northbound mother/calf pair to Journey North!

Date of first sighting of northbound gray whales.
  • Date of first sighting of northbound gray whale mother/calf pairs.
