Bottom Feeders in Training
Whale watchers visiting the nursery lagoons start to see the babies learn feeding behavior. The calves will still nurse on migration, but they are learning how to find food. In water about 10 feet deep, mom shows her calf how to dive down and use one side of its face to “plow” up the lagoon bottom. Their pectoral fins and tail flukes stick up in the air as they move slowly along, "grazing" on the sea bottom. The warm waters of the Mexican lagoons offer very little whale food, but the babies get some practice.
