Big Miracle
This 2012 film is based on the incredible true story of Operation Breakthrough, a real-life rescue in 1988. Three gray whales were trapped by rapidly forming ice near Barrow, Alaska, before they began migration. The film tells how an entire Alaskan community fought to free them by chopping a path of breathing holes in the ice so these giant mammals could reach open water and migrate south. At the end of the film, stay for the credits to see clips of the real-life event. What can these gentle giants and their monumental migration teach us about survival?
