Keeping Feeders Up
Available feeders can mean the difference between life and death for stragglers or juveniles who needed time to grow before starting to migrate. Your feeders will NOT delay migration, as a hummer's drive to migrate comes from daylength and weather factors, not hunger.
Leave your feeders up for at least two weeks after you think you've seen your last hummer. If you're in southeastern states, leaving a feeder up may attract one of the western hummingbirds that visit the region in small numbers every winter.
"We keep feeders full until we have seen no birds for at least 2 weeks. Late migrants will find a big Texas welcome at our home!"
