Predicting When Hummingbirds Will Arrive

Overview
Predict when your first hummingbirds will arrive this spring. Each week check the migration map and locate the nearest sighting. Calculate the distance between your location and the nearest sighting to estimate when your hummers will arrive.


Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Check the migration map to find out where hummingbirds have been reported. Locate a dot nearest to your location.

2. Click on the sighting dot and read the full report. Record the observer's location, including latitude and longitude coordinates.

3. Use the Latitude/Longitude or Distance calculator to measure the distance between your location and the nearest sighting.

4. Estimate how long it will take the nearest hummers to travel the distance you calculated by researching facts about how hummingbirds migrate. Record your prediction.
