Fat Makes Them Fit!
All that eating builds up layers of fat on the back, belly, and throat. How fat are hummers before they migrate? They almost double their weight! Can you imagine putting on 100 pounds before a marathon race? Human bodies couldn't handle it. But birds are great at getting energy from fat, and well-adapted hummingbird wings can bear the weight.

A hummingbird bander blows on a hummingbird's chest feathers. Through the thin clear skin, you can see whitish-yellow fat.
