Banding data can help us better understand migration. Many scientists assume that some Rufous hummers leave their breeding grounds to winter in the Southeast, but without the dedicated work of banders like Nancy, they can't be sure. Sweet Pea is one of only a few hummingbirds that banders know actually made that trip.

According to bander, Nancy Newfield, about 15 - 20% of hummingbirds return in subsequent winter seasons, sometimes for up to 8 years. If Sweet Pea is recaptured, the Bird Banding Lab would notify Nancy.
