Banding data can help us better understand
migration. Many scientists assume that some Rufous hummers
leave their breeding grounds to winter in the Southeast, but without
the dedicated work of banders like Nancy, they can't be sure. Sweet
Pea is one of only a few hummingbirds that banders know actually made that
trip.
According to bander, Nancy Newfield, about 15 - 20% of hummingbirds return in subsequent
winter seasons, sometimes for up to 8 years. If Sweet Pea is recaptured, the Bird Banding Lab would notify Nancy. Do you think Sweet Pea returned to Louisiana in the fall and if she did, do you think she returned to Joan Garvey's house each year?
