Background |
Length 248 cm, weight 680 lbs. at time she was captured and tagged at Port of the
Islands, a series of man-made canals at the north end of the Faka Union Canal (25.961N,
-81.509W), which leads to the Faka Union Bay in Ten Thousand Islands. The crew was
surprised when this female swam in the net! Addison is the 5-year old
wild born calf of "Naples" a previously captive manatee. Naples
had been rescued in 1987 with rib fractures and other injuries after a collision
with a boat. She was successfully rehabilitated and released in Charlotte Harbor
in 1994, and gave birth to Addison in 1995. |
Summer/Fall 2001 Recap |
Like Nina, Addison spent most of the summer and fall using the canals of Marco Island,
Isles of Capri and Tarpon Bay. In June she made one trip to Tripod Key in Gullivan
Bay and in August she made a trip north to Rookery Bay and Naples. Addison also made
one trip in November and one trip in December to the grass beds off Cape Romano but
did not stay long. In mid-January, Addison made her first move back toward Port of
the Islands and used the area of Fakahatchee Bay and the Fakahatchee and East Rivers.
She is currently using the outer islands of the southeastern side of Gullivan Bay.
