Home on the Range

Make a "range map" for last year's manatees. Range is the area a manatee occupies in the course of its normal daily activities. Use the data and maps provided for their migrations last year. Your job is to define each manatee's range during the months it was tracked.

Try This! Journaling Question

Manatee Home Range
Tracking last year's manatees gives you a rare opportunity to compare their movements last year to their movements during the same time this year. Take a look at last year's archived data and migration maps for Addison, Grace, Megan and Santina. In your Journal, write a description of each manatee's "range" last season. How do the manatees' respective ranges compare to each other? Will the manatees' movements last year allow you to predict their movements this year?

Human Home Range
To put these manatees' movements in perspective, compare them to your own travels. What is your range during these same months? How does a manatee's range compare to your own? Describe the area that you occupy in the course of your normal daily activities. Is your range different from one season to another? If so, think of the reasons why.
