Sunlight and the Seasons
Telling Time with Sundials

People in this hemisphere noticed that shadows pointed north when the sun was highest. A shadow was long in the morning, as the sun came up in the east. It was its shortest at noon. Then it got longer again until the sun set in the west — but the shadow was on the other side of the object. (It had moved "clockwise"!)

The first time-telling tool was probably created by someone who put a stick in the ground and marked the end of the shadow throughout the day. These students in Minnesota are doing the same thing!
