Dear Students,
While you were away on Easter vacation, the monarchs were busy traveling!

New states for your migration map include Arkansas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina--and even Virginia!

Question of the Week #1: Assuming the monarch that was seen in Gloucester, Virginia (37.28 N, -76.33 W) flew from the Mexican sanctuaries (19N, -100W), how many miles did the monarch fly?

Question of the Week #2: If, instead of going to Virginia, that same monarch butterfly had flown the same distance DUE NORTH from Mexico where would it be? Give the name of the state, the nearest town, and the latitude. (Clue: You already know the longitude would be -100 W, because we're assuming the fictitious butterfly flew due north.)

Is the migration traveling in the direction you predicted? Record the new states where monarchs have arrived on your Migration Route Prediction Chart. In your class, discuss why you think the migration is moving to the east instead of straight north.
