October 24, 2002 Dear Students, On Monday, October 21, I saw a lonely Monarch flying from near downtown Angangueo towards the Municipal Cemetery and then way up to the "El Rosario" sanctuary. I was able to walk after it for a while. In addition, I have some relatives-in-law who live by the road that goes up the mountain to the "Sierra Chincua" sanctuary. One of them told me he had seen a butterfly (Monarch, of course), flying around the back part of his house. Most people to whom I've talked about the Monarchs' arrival say they are somehow surprised at not having seen any more butterflies. They remember this time last year when there seemed to be more Monarchs passing by than there are now. Kind regards,
German Martínez-Medina P.S. I've been also asking people coming to the store
from Cerro Prieto and El Llano de las Papas about Monarchs, and they
assure no butterflies are seen yet.
Ma. Estela.
