Fly Like a Butterfly All the Way to Mexico!
Try Google Maps for a Satellite-view

Where is the monarch’s winter home in Mexico? What does the habitat look like along the migration trail? You can see for yourself using "Google Maps."

It's like flying!

Try This!
Go to GoogleMaps. Put any of the following locations in the search engine. Select “satellite” view. Zoom-in for a close-up view of the landscape. Then zoom-out for a global perspective.

  • Angangueo, Mexico—Find this mountain town in Mexico. This is the region where the monarchs are headed! Angangueo is at its center of the monarch sanctuary region.
  • Your hometown—Take a close-up look at your own home or school, then zoom-out and fly like a butterfly all the way to Angangueo, Mexico.
  • Cannon Falls, Minnesota—This is one site where hundreds of migrating monarchs are now resting, in overnight roosts. What do you notice about the surrounding landscape? Find where other roost sites are located, too.
  • Geographic features along the migration trail—Watch for prairies, mountains, water crossings, deserts, and oceans that may affect the monarchs as they travel.
  • Your favorite highlights of this fall's migration—As you track the migration with us this fall, take a satellite view of your favorite highlights. Bookmark the Google Maps and plan to visit again!

Here's an Example: Look at Fall Migration Habitat

"We observed around 100 monarchs resting and feeding today in our front yard butterfly garden," reported Sheila Daniels from Loda, Illinois. "We live out in the country surrounded by corn and soybean fields for miles in each direction so we are an oasis."

1) Find the satellite snapshot of Loda, Illinois. Go to Google Maps and put "Loda, IL" the in the search engine.

2) Using your mouse, "fly" across the landscape. Measure how many miles this patchwork pattern of cropland extends.

3) Farming practices have a wide-scale impact on monarch habitat, and a butterfly garden can be an important place for a monarch to refuel. Find out how you can protect monarch habitat.
