Recolonization of North America The
monarch breeding grounds in eastern North America are 11,000 times bigger
than the space the butterflies occupy during the winter in Mexico! The
monarchs leave Mexico during the month of March. The first butterflies
appear in the United States sometime before March 15th each year. It
takes until mid-June for monarchs to reach the extent of their range.
