Late-migrating monarchs are less likely to reach Mexico. In order to fly, monarchs need temperatures of at least 50°F when sunny and at least 60°F when cloudy. However, monarchs can travel quickly when temperatures and wind conditions are favorable. A monarch was tagged on October 9, 2008 in New Jersey and recovered on October 12th in Georgia. The butterfly had traveled 550 of miles in three days — an average of 180 miles per day.
