A
Migration That Takes Generations to Complete
Monarch butterfly migration is unique because it
takes two or more generations for monarchs to complete the journey
across North America. If
you live in the north, the first monarch butterfly you see in the
spring will probably not come from Mexico. It will be one of the
children— or even grandchildren—of the monarchs from
Mexico.
- Just
Think: Monarchs must find good habitat in the spring
when they return from Mexico in order for their cycle of life
to continue. Can you see which region of North America is the
most critical for monarchs in the springtime?
