The pattern of the stripes is the same but their widths are different.
The larva on the right looks lighter because its white stripes are
wider. Scientists in Dr. Karen Oberhauser's lab discovered that the stripes of monarch larvae can
be different sizes depending upon the temperatures
in which the caterpillars grow.
