What we learned from our experiment:

  • We observed that it was hard to see the monarch when it was 300 feet away. It looked like a tiny dot.
  • We also observed that the color of the background affected how well we could see the monarch in this experiment.
  • Based on these results, we concluded that a monarch can disappear from view when it is flying as low as 300 feet. We would probably not notice a monarch that was flying overhead at that height.
Based on past experience, we also know that:
  • it is easier to see monarchs when they are moving (rather than stationary like the monarch in this experiment was), and
  • it is easier to see monarchs when they are flying in a large group (rather than alone, like the monarch in this experiment was).
Therefore, we conclude that it might be possible to see monarchs when they are flying more than 300 feet high.
