Feeding a Fledgling
Here are the clues that this is a father robin feeding berries to a juvenile:
- The speckled breast and short tail reveal the robin being fed is a juvenile.
- Male robins have dark black heads and bright orange breasts. They often have white stripes on their throats. Females have paler colors than the males.
- Fathers usually feed the young while mothers are busy preparing for the next clutch — building or repairing nests and then laying and incubating eggs.
Notice that the father has squished the berry to break the waxy coating and make it easier for the young robin to digest the juice and pulp! |
