Robin Home Page Robins for Kids

Robin's Nest Movie
Back

Those babies looked hungry. Did you know that they eat all the time, from sunrise to sunset? A baby robin raised in an experiment ate 14 feet of worms in one day!

Did you notice . . . ?
Here's what happened:
When the mother flies in, her beak looks empty, but she looks like she's feeding babies.

The mother regurgitated (threw up) bits of food she caught and ate herself.

The babies are so tiny that a whole worm would be too big for their mouths!

After the mother fed the babies, she pulled out something with her beak and ate it.

She ate the babies' fecal sacs (poop)!

The babies can’t digest all their food. This gives mom enough food while she's spending most of her time getting more for the kids.
