Young Robin
Three clues in this photo provide evidence that this robin is a juvenile:
- The fluffy, speckled breast. The downy feathers will be pushed out by orange-red adult feathers.
- The soft, wide, orange beak. In a few weeks, the corners of the beak—called the gape—will narrow and harden.
- The open beak begging for food. Juvenile males don't sing until they're of breeding age; female robins don't sing at all.
