Students
and adult helpers set up an observatory by drilling
21 holes through the ice. Holes are made every 5 meters along
a 100-meter line.
After the ice
thickness
is measured, a wooden stake is put in each hole and
allowed to freeze into the ice. The stakes mark where snow depth
and the
temperature at the bottom of the snow are measured with
snow depth/temperature probes.
