What? Leaves in Wintertime?
(Back to Photo)

The leaves on this plant are a purplish-green. Some of them have brown colored areas on them. Did you notice the leaves look thick and leathery? The snow sits on the leaf and it isn't wilted from the cold.
This plant holds on to its greenery all winter. What advantage would this plant have over a plant that loses all their leaves in the fall?

At the base of each leaf—where it attaches to the plant stem—there is a little bump. This bump will turn into a new stem with new leaves. Right now it is tucked tightly into the stem where it is protected. When will it start to swell and grow?

Plants have many ways of adapting to their environments. Some have thick and waxy leaves. Some have soft, hairy leaves. When you look closely you can begin to find out more.
