Spotlight: Where is this Mystery Garden Site?

Here is a puzzler for you:
Share this journal entry and photographs from a Journey North gardener. How do YOUR temperatures, daylength and other signs of fall compare with this Mystery Garden site?
Read the entry carefully and study the photos for clues.
Watch for these terms - what do they mean?

  • termination dust
  • Aurora Borealis

Discuss where you think this garden is located. (* hint: It is in North America.)

September 26
It has been partly cloudy, rainy, and some bursts of sunshine for the last week. Our temps now are ranging from 40-53 degrees daily. We had termination dust over the weekend (so everyone is talking about that)--that is when it snows on top of the taller mountains and rains down here. When the clouds lift and the sun comes out--sparkling white snow all over the
mountaintops--we watch it climb down closer to us in the fall to predict winter.

The Aurora Borealis has been very active already this year--earlier than usual, but with the cloud cover, it is hard to catch it. It is usually most active between 1:00 and 5:00a.m. Sunrise now is at 7:53am and sunset is 7:46pm.

The birch are all yellow and the highbush cranberry bushes and the fireweed have turned red and orange. Our autumn colors separate-yellow up high and reds low to the ground.

My husband and I had a mama moose and baby in our backyard this morning, and saw another cow moose on the way to work along the highway.

Where is this garden? Don't peek before making some predictions!
NOW you can look!
