Shageluk, Alaska
Fifth graders at the Innoko River School got lucky this fall. Their Red Emperor tulips arrived at the very last minute before the ground was expected to freeze! Teacher Joyanne Hamilton explains,

"We have had trouble planting in the fall because our fall comes so much earlier than the mid latitudes and we don't get our bulbs until VERY late, Alaska-time.

"I ordered our bulbs in July this year and finally got them the day before we planted them last week. Egads! And normally things are pretty frozen up by now. We have had a warm fall. Temps are about 40°. We had a couple of snow squalls since the end of September, but nothing sticking except on the upper elevations of the hills in our area." 10/04/13
