Spotlight on the Gardens
Reported April 21 - 27, 2006

We were on spring break from school (4/14-4/23) so I don't know the exact
date the tulips bloomed. When I opened the blinds this morning the
students all ran to the windows to see the beautiful red tulips in
the garden outside. The weather was warm (65-75) and sunny last week
with cool evenings (40-50). It is cloudy and very cool today so the
tulips have been closed all day.

The first tulip in my garden is blooming today!
The first emerged on March 31st, so it took 27 days for the flower to
develop.
Last year the first emerged on April 5th and didn't bloom until May 11th,
so that made 36 days from emerge to bloom. The cool weather arrested
their growth to the point that I was sure they were bad bulbs and would
never bloom.
Over the years, I've noticed that hummingbirds arrive and maple trees
flower when tulips first bloom. This is not to say that hummingbirds
drink nectar from tulips! However, the heat required for both events
seems to be quite similar.

"I thought it was one
of the most beautiful things I ever saw" when I went outside and
saw almost all of our tulips blooming at once. We even have a double
blossom on one plant!

Monday April 24th. There are 13 tulip
plants blooming. We're hoping the rest bloom this week.

When we returned from spring break, there they were, making a splash
of color in our yard! They were somewhat ragged looking; we think the
squirrels feasted on them. But their beauty shined through!

The rain that we had over the weekend really hurt our tulips-some of
the petals were coming off and some of the tulips were bent over. We
had a little bit of snow this morning(4/25/06)but that didn't hurt
them very much. We think that all of our experimental tulips came up
even ones that I covered with pebbles!
Bridport,

We couldn't believe our tulips blossomed already. It has been very warm
with only a few nights in the low 30's and lots of sun, little rain.
This is the earliest ours have ever bloomed.

Dear Journey North,
When we planted the tulips, we measured 7 inches deep. We learned all
about plants. Our plants are just now blooming. We liked their long leaves.
We didn't like that they died. Sincerely, Room 12- second grade
