If you have tulips emerging early when there is still a chance of extended freezing temperatures you can protect them with a layer of mulch.

Many kinds of mulch can be used including wood chips, straw, marsh hay, pine needles, and cocao shells. Spreading a 4-6" layer of mulch on top of the garden will protect the plants from extended low temperatures.
