Garden Highlights
Week ending February 23, 2012

02/16/12 Kaiserslautern, Germany
Last Year's Tulips: We have had a very mild, dry winter in Germany, with ave. temps in the upper 40s F. On 17 January, it was very cold, with temps below 15 degrees F! We observed about 35 of last year's tulips emerged, and were a very dark green [almost black]. This worried us. Were they "frostbitten"? Will they still grow?
We measured most sprouts at about 1 inch; but, we found 3 that were almost 3 inches (about 8 cm)! Our tulips emerged on February 16 last year, almost a month later. * We noted that none have emerged from our test garden.

02/09/12 Lincolnshire, Illinois
We saw tulips emerging from the ground in February! We observed that one bulb was about one half inch tall and the second bulb was only about 1/4 inch tall. There were only two that we could find, after looking very closely!

02/06/12 La Jolla, California
Today we observed our first two tulips emerge! We planted twenty bulbs a month ago. We had predicted that it was going to take longer for Spring to come. It has been warm over the last couple of weeks, with only a few cold days.
