A Fallout During Migration
A 'fallout' is said to occur when weather conditions shift suddenly during migration and make travel so difficult that the migrants seem to 'fall out' of the sky. Hungry, tired Baltimore Orioles were feasting on oranges during a spectacular fallout on South Padre Island in Texas from April 25-30, 2013. Volunteers begged for people to bring bags of oranges, meal worms, and bird seed to get thousands of totally exhausted migrants through until weather conditions improved and they could resume migration. They've just crossed the Gulf of Mexico nonstop on their spring return from the tropics.
