Baltimore oriole
They've just crossed the Gulf of Mexico nonstop on their spring return from the tropics and were reported in Mississippi. Migrating orioles eagerly visit feeders for oranges and sugar water. They feast on cut fruit, grape jelly, and nectar as well as insects. The state bird of Maryland is a summer resident of eastern woodlands. These melodic beauties build pouch-shaped nests. The Baltimore Oriole is the only bright orange bird in most of its range.
