Common Loon Migration Update
May 9, 1996

Over the month of April, as the waters across the loons' breeding grounds opened, the loons' arrival followed close behind. Today's report is full of new loon locations to plot on your migration map.

The Following Migration Sightings Collected by the Volunteers of the National Birding Hotline Cooperative and Journey North:

From PENNSYLVANIA:
April 13, 1996
In the northwest: on April 13 in Erie County 74 COMMON LOONS were seen on Edinboro Lake (South of Erie).

From CONNECTICUT:
April 14, 1996
Nepaug Reservoir (NW of West Hartford) was what a veteran local birder called "the best he's ever seen", on Sunday April 14th. The list of species included three COMMON LOONS.

From NEW YORK:
April 14, 1996
The northwest corner of Niagara County (North of Niagara Falls) compiled 93 species highlighted by 6 RED-THROATED LOONS and 16 COMMON LOONS on the Lewiston Reservoir.

From MASSACHUSETTS:
April 15, 1996
In Holyoke (North of Springfield), at Ashley Reservoir: 2 COMMON LOONS

From PENNSYLVANIA:
April 15, 1996
In Chester Co., 2 RED-NECKED GREBES and 2 COMMON LOONS were on Marsh Creek Lake (West of Philadelphia) on Monday.

From ILLINOIS:
April 15, 1996
At Herrick Lake (West Chicago) - a LOON was seen on Monday and Tuesday.

From Western MAINE:
April 16, 1996
Western Maine, In Bridgton (West of Auburn) this week there were: COMMON LOONS.

From MAINE:
April 18, 1996
COMMON LOONS also returned to Swets Pond in Orrington (South of Bangor) this week.

From MARYLAND:
April 18, 1996
On Thursday, April 18th at Loch Raven Reservoir (North of Towson), breeding plumage COMMON LOONS were still remaining.

From ILLINOIS:
April 19, 1996
Few birds remain on Lake Springfield,(Springfield)- COMMON LOON or two.

From Downeast and Central MAINE:
April 17,18, 20 1996
A COMMON LOON in full breeding plumage was at Upper Hadlock Pond on 04/17, 2 RED-THROATED LOONS were found at Belfast Harbor (South of Bangor). Also found at Western Head in Cutler (across from Grand Manan Island) there was 1 COMMON LOON

From MICHIGAN-ONTARIO:
April 22, 1996
The first RED-THROATED LOON of the season appeared at still wintry Whitefish Point (Upper Penninsula of Michigan--NW of Sault Ste. Marie) on the 22nd.

Waterbird species recorded in the past week include most of the diving and dabbling ducks, COMMON LOON, RED-THROATED LOON.

In Montgomery Co., at Spring Mountain, across the Perkiomen Creek from Schwenksville (NW of Philadelphia), Seen there Thursday, April 25th: COMMON LOON.

From NEW JERSEY:
April 25, 1996
CMBO's Loon Outing savored COMMON LOONS in breeding plumage, in Sunset Lake in Wildwood Crest (South of Vineland) -- a rare treat seen briefly before they migrate north, and good looks at lots of RED-THROATED LOONS flying by the Concrete Ship, among many other wonderful spring sightings.

From Hamilton area ONTARIO:
April 25, 1995
60 RED-THROATED LOONS were over Woodland Cemetery.

From Western MASSACHUSETTS:
April 26, 1996
At South Quabbin : 1 COMMON LOON,

From KANSAS:
April 27, 1996
Pottawatomie County:
A RED-THROATED LOON was seen at Pottawatomie County Lake #2 (Northeast of Manhattan Kansas) by Rintoul and Jerry Reeck on April 27th.

From DELAWARE:
April 27, 1996
In southern Delaware, along the Nanticoke River near Laurel (South of Dover), COMMON LOONS flying overhead in migration.

From NEW HAMPSHIRE:
April 28, 1996
At the coast (SE of Portsmouth) on April 28th there were Red-throated Loons.

From WESTERN NEW YORK:
April 28, 1996
April 28, at Countryside Sand and Gravel in Dayton (South of Buffalo) at the very south end of the south pond, 11 other waterfowl species including COMMON LOON were seen.

From NEW JERSEY:
April 28, 1996
Reports were received this week that fell into the "possible' category. Possible PACIFIC LOON was reported from the toll bridge on Nummy Island. Areas were searched to no avail the following day. (Credit: Cape May Bird Observatory staff)

From KANSAS:
April 28 & 30, 1996
Pottawatomie County:
The RED-THROATED LOON that was at Pottawatomie Lake #2 (NW of Topeka) on Saturday has not been seen again but a COMMON LOON was present there on April 30.Numbers and variety of most species were belownormal for late April.

From Hamilton area ONTARIO:
April 29, 1996
RED-THROATED LOONS continue to pass through.

From PENNSLVANIA:
April 29, 1996
A breeding plumage PACIFIC LOON was seen at Green Lane Reservoir in Montgomery Co.(NW of Philadelphia) on Monday, April 29th. There have been no further reports about this bird.

From MAINE:
April 30, 1996
York County
At Fort Foster in Kittery (South of Portland) there was a RED-THROATED LOON.

From MASSACHUSETTS:
May 3, 1996
Other Cape Cod reports include a general arrival of 10 COMMON LOONS at Sandy Neck in Barnstable (North of Hyannis).

From KANSAS:
May 5, 1996
At Wyandotte County Lake (North of Overland Pk.) on May 5 Lloyd Moore and Mick McHugh had many sightings including 2 COMMON LOONS.

From MASSACHUSETTS:
Nantucket Island
May 5, 1996
Off the navy base in Tom Nevers (SE of Nantucket) 18 COMMON LOONS and 2 [RED-THROATED LOONS] were seen.

From QUEBEC:
May 6, 1996
PLONGEON CATMARIN/Gavia stellata/Red-throated Loon Ils etaient presents au Reservoir Chouaniere, Granby (East of Montreal).

From ONTARIO:
May 7, 1996
Many COMMON LOONS are on the lake at Burlington.
