Mystery Class Update:
April 5, 1996

Last week, some of you noticed something peculiar happening with Mystery Class # 6. This was no early April fools joke--we made a mistake! The sunset time for Mystery Site # 6 should actually have been 20:54, not 18:54--sorry for any confusion. We made a subtraction error when converting to Military Time.

Some classes noted something else strange at this Mystery Site, and we asked you about this in the Challenge Question # 61 which asked:

"Based on this week's sunrise/sunset data, what do you think happenened at Mystery Site # 6 ? Why doesn't this change your graph?"

Thanks to the classrooms who answered this Challenge Question. Just as they suspected, the strange change in times with this Mystery Class was caused by the beginning of Daylight Savings time at this site. However, just because people shifted their clocks for Daylight Savings Time this didn't cause photoperiod to change. Obviously the sun stayed up for the same number of hours regardless of what time people said it was. Do you know when Daylight Savings Time takes effect in your town? Remember, this won't affect your graph.

Here's the sunrise and sunset data for this week. You'll find another set of clues below. Are you almost ready to guess where these sites are located? Clues will be coming for just 3 more weeks, then you'll have a chance to place your guess.

From MINNESOTA:
Dear Mrs. Berger's Class,
Ms. Betsy Bryant, a student in our fourth grade class, says that class number 6 must have gone on daylight savings time. The graph looks as if it took a big dip down.
Thank you,
