Students Visit Mexican Monarch Sanctuaries: February 6, 1996

Dear Journey North,

Greetings from the monarch butterflies' winter home in Angangueo, Mexico! My high school students and I are from Blake School in the U.S. Through a collaboration with Journey North, we're here to deliver a lap top computer to Mexican researchers who are studying the monarchs in the mountains surrounding this town. With the computer, the researchers will be able to send regular updates to you containing the latest information on the status of the monarchs and the research being conducted here. We are also helping the local high school in Angangueo connect to the Internet!

After many trials and tribulations we got the computer to work for the first time over the weekend. Two Mexican scientists sent the first message to you. I worked with them Saturday on the computer as they sent this message, in Spanish of course. (If you have trouble reading it, don't worry. We'll be back soon and will translate it for you.)

While here we are living like exchange students, staying as guests in the people's homes and learning the way of life here. When my students and I return we will invite you to be part of this exchange. We will share our experiences with you on the WWW and via e-mail. For starters, please visit our Web pages (http://www.blake.pvt.k12.mn.us/). Here you will find personal biographies (bilingual!) of the eight students who are here. You will also find research summaries written by these students, which will inform you about the many aspects of the monarch's life history and important conservation issues.

The students and I hope by sharing our stories about the people of Angangueo, we can provide a picture of what life is like for the residents of this town and how they live side-by-side with the monarch butterfly.

More later....Hasta luego

Can you find Angangueo on a map? It's located about 125 km west of Mexico City. Four of the nine monarch sanctuaries surround this small mountain town! (If your map doesn't show Angangueo, it's located in the state of Michoacan, 25 km north of Zitacuaro and 25 km east of Ciudad Hidalgo.)
